Tumbleweed Cafe Worm Farm & Can of Worms Farm

1.             To help your knowledge, please read instruction manual first.

2.              Into the solid based tray, insert tap into hole provided and tighten lug inside, keeping the flat side to the surface. Connect legs onto solid based tray according to   the design.

3.             The solid based tray, (is the liquid catchment tray), put a container under the tap and when it is half full, fill it up with  water and  pour it  around whatever plants you wish to fertilize.

4.              Into one of the mesh bottom trays (call it tray two) place in the bottom, the cardboard mat  which has been provided in the covering of the pack. This matt  retains the bedding material in the initial tray only and will probably be eaten by the worms anyway and will not be required in the future.

5.             When starting a factory from new, the next step is to place the prepared material from fibre brick into the first working tray on top of the cardboard mat (this is tray two). Prepare the fibre block by placing it in a 10 litre bucket of water for ¼ to ½ an hour where it is allowed to soak until the block has completely fallen apart. If using Worm Affair  worms there is no need to use the fibre block as they are packed in sufficient bedding already, simply add the worms at this stage. Now, (depending on whether you are using the factory for recycling Household Vegetable Scraps or as an Animal Manure Converter), place some kitchen scraps or animal manures, do not mix both together, on top of the worms and the bedding. The worms will quickly disappear because they can’t stand the light. Place a full wet newspaper or if you wish a damp carpet or Tumbleweed Worm Blanket over the worms food. Your factory is now in full production. Place the other  trays and lid in position. The worm factory must be put in a shady cool site away from the heat and direct sun. Worms will eat most vegetable matter however they dislike both onions and citrus fruits so it pays to separate these items.

6.             Recommended requirements for proper function are as follows:  Single Persons – 1000 Worms, Family of two or more require a minimum of  - 2000 Worms otherwise the operation will be too slow. If you are using a worm farm as a Dog manure converter, then you will need at least  1000 for each Dog. Always remember the more you want to do with your worm farm the more worms you will need.

7.              Only feed worms what they will eat in 2 - 3 days, bearing in mind they can eat between half of and up to their own weight each day. Weight calculations is as follows: 4000 worms equal approximately one kilo, so by deduction you will know about how much to feed them in relation to the amount of worms you have purchased, eg, 2000 worms could eat up to ½ kilo per day. Worms can double their population about every 6 - 8  weeks, depending on conditions. Therefore, the food required will gradually increase over a three to five month period as the baby worms grow to maturity. However, worms will also control their breeding according to their food supply and environment.

When using the factory as a Dog Manure Converter, at the times you are using a worming product to worm your pet, you should note that these substances can be harmful to your worms. Any droppings from your pet that are produced in the 48 hours following treatment, should be disposed of by some alternative method. After this time, the treatment will have cleared through the animal’s system. Generally ‘Heart Worm’ treatments do not effect compost worms.

8.             When each tray is full of castings to the inside line, start feeding in the tray above. Remember worms work upward not downwards. Move the paper / Worm Blanket / carpet and place on top of the food in the next tray. When all the trays are full and eaten, remove the bottom working tray (this is tray 2 as mentioned before). Use on garden, because at this stage you will have about 20 litres of worm castings. It pays to clean the bottom (liquid catchment tray) at the same time. The empty tray now becomes the tray on the top and so this cycle will continue for the life of the worm factory.

9.             Some  worms never seem to go to the top and remain down in the bottom tray. Since you do not want to throw too many surplus worms into your garden. A simple way to sort these worms out is to switch the tray you are currently feeding into the bottom and move the bottom tray to the top. Now leave the lid off and stir up the castings. The worms do not like the light  or their environment going dry  so  after a few days of being stirred up they will drop down onto the fresh food below. When this happens you can then tip the tray out on the garden, clean it out  and then it is the empty trays on the top.

10.          The contents of the tray must always be damp but not soggy. You will only get one tray of castings at a time because the baby worms and eggs will still be in the trays below. So only one tray of castings to be taken at any one time.

11.        Put a bucket under the tap and turn the tap to drip only. From this comes one of the major benefits - liquid fertilizer or as we call it liquid gold. This is good for pot plants, hanging baskets and general garden. Water down for wide use. Add water to maximum 50%. It won’t burn your plants as it is pH Neutral as are the worm castings.
